From Construction Manager to Glamping Domes

I’ve spent most of my life in construction – in earlier days as an electrical contractor, then as MEP Project Manager, and later as a Project Construction Manager in the Consultancy.

Decades of problem problem-solving, tight deadlines, and hardhats taught me a lot, but at 66 yo, I was ready for change. So, I decided to do something I’d been dreaming of for some time:

Building Timber Frame Glamping Domes.

I started with big ambitions – a spacious 6-meter timber frame geodome and a 3-month lease for a rented workshop.

My fist attempt was not my finest work

My first attempt at building my first dome wasn’t my finest work. The cuts were slightly off making it difficult. (100% precision is the key to dome building).

I knew it wasn’t good enough, so I did what any seasoned builder would do – I took it down, salvaged what wood I could, and downsized my vision.

The 5-meter dome that followed was a step up – better, but still not perfect!

There were lessons in every strut cut, every joint.

So, once again, I dismantled, repurposed and tried again – this time, a 4-meter dome.

Finally, there it was – the struts aligned, the structure sturdy, and the craftmanship matched the vision. It wasn’t just a dome; it was proof that even after a lifetime in construction, there is always something new to learn.

My second attempt was much better – but still a lot to learn.

Now, with sawdust all over the place, I has built a structure I would be happy to showoff.

but even the 4-meter dome – solid as it was – had to go.

I dismantled it, salvages as much of the timer as I could, and built a scaled down 2-meter model. This time, the goal wasn’t just the structure – it was function.

  • testing the waterproofing for weather resistance
  • weight ratio
  • and even configured the frame to fit an off-grid toilet system.

Three and a half domes (yes, I’m counting the first attempt as half), I’d learned enough to claim I’m a proficient dome builder.

3-month later, I let go of the workshop. If I build more domes, I’ll do it on site – it’s cheaper, simpler and more practical.

I wanted to test the process, so I assembled the domes alone (something I do not recommend).

Then came the real challenge – one I hadn’t seen coming.

It wasn’t the dome construction that tripped me up. It was the unexpected bureaucracy and paperwork that caught me by surprise.

No, you cannot simply put up a dome!

There are all sorts of nuances like zoning rights, title deeds, Municipal permission, architect sign-off – a legal minefield, even for a simple structure like a glamping pod.

Now, was deciphering bylaws, building codes and all sorts of red tape nuances I hadn’t expected!

Turns out the toughest structures aren’t made of timber. They’re made off regulations.

But I’m still standing. Still excited. Even after all the legalese.

I keep reminding myself that this was never supposed to be a business.

For me, it’s a way to keep my hands busy and my mind sharp, when most people my age are content with retirement. Life has a funny way of turning hobbies into possibilities.

What’s next –

Do I scale this?

Sure, I’m not looking to build a business empire. I certainly do not want factories, employees, inventory.

But if someone out there wants one of these beautiful structures – whether for a secluded farm retreat, an Airbnb venture, or elevate an existing camp site – I’m happy to collaborate.

After all, I’ve already done the hard part:

  1. The trial and error (3 1/2 domes worth)
  2. Figured out the bureaucratic maze (title deeds, zoning, fire regulations, permits, approvals)
  3. Set the logistics: I’ll come to you, build it on your site using local materials wherever possible.

Project Management –

… and with decades of Project Management under my belt, I can do more than just build a dome – I can help plan your entire project – including:

  1. Assisting with municipal permissions & approvals where applicable.
  2. Assisting with your architect/designer for municipal approvals.
  3. Provide the architect with dome plans.
  4. Assist and oversee site infrastructure preparations.
  5. Build the deck for the dome – including exterior works like gazebos.
  6. Build the dome including interior.

So, here’s an offer –

If you looking to build a unique cost-effective dome

  1. I’ll prepare a basic process and budget plan.
  2. Guide you through the process of obtaining council permission.
